The One

Everyone is in the journey of life to understand the environment. However, I believe that the mastery of oneself surpasses the control of environment. It is all evident in the recent Athens Olympics. All too often, athletes lose not to their opponents but to themselves. Therefore, a good understanding of oneself is essential to mastering the environment.

Who am I?

That question surfaced in my brain whenever I lay on my bed, head looking at the empty wall. Am I the name which my parents gave me when I was born? Am I the introverted guy people around make of me? Am I the crappy person who stacks a whole load of information my friends know me as? It seems that I, as like everyone, have different identities. Are we living our true identity? Or do we look at the situation and act accordingly?

I believe the answer to my question lies in Individuality, a chapter of Tao De Jing by Lao Tze:

My words are easy to understand
And my actions are easy to perform
Yet no other can understand or perform them.

My words have meaning; my actions have reason;
Yet these cannot be known and I cannot be known.

We are each unique, and therefore valuable;
Though the sage wears coarse clothes, his heart is jade.
